Paleo For the Noobs

If you’re completely new to paleo, primal, ancestral health, the caveman diet or ‘that weird diet that people run around barefoot and eat a bunch of meat’ you may be asking what this is all about. The answer to the million dollar question, What is paleo?!, is in it’s basic form answered with just 2 stupidly simple rules:

The Paleo 2 Step

  1. Eat Plants, Animals, Nuts and Seeds
  2. Move Frequently and Lift Heavy Things
Paleo is as easy as that. A lot of people in the media seem to think the paleo diet is all about consuming large quantities of meat, but they’re unfortunately grossly misinformed. A typical paleo recipe, as you see below, consists of plants, animals, nuts and seeds – in that order. Sure, by weight meat is the largest portion of the paleo diet however a good rule of thumb is that plants, animals, nuts and seeds account for your plate coverage, in that order. If your plate is overflowing with meat and lacking any sort of vegetation, I hate to say it, but you’re missing out. Are Paleo Recipes all meat? Arguably me and Marla may eat more vegetables than certain vegetarians – those who would be better labeled as merely ‘non-meat eaters’. That’s why you’ll notice most of the paleo recipes on this site are heavy on the veggies. Where some restrictive diets (ergh, I hate that word) focus on food replacements and supplements, paleo is focused simply upon removing inflammation causing products and sticking to whole foods (plants, animals, nuts and seeds). If you’re like me and always want more, for the most thorough deep dive into paleo check out Mark’s Daily Apple and his spectacular book, The Primal Blueprint. Mark’s site introduced us to his brand of paleo way back in 2008, so not only do we owe him an immense debt of gratitude, but we’re fans for life. While The Primal Blueprint is by far my #1 recommendation for anyone interested in the paleo diet, Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes is another excellent choice. While not specifically about paleo, much of what he talks about fits perfectly into the paleo lifestyle and will quite perfectly mirror the ingredients that go into each and every one of our paleo recipes.

For the Paleo Veterans

You already know that grains aren’t paleo and bread’s been off of your radar for quite some time, but what about some other less obvious food choices, like supposed superfoods? They must all get a thumbs up and be a part of any good paleo recipe, right? Well… maybe. Even after 5 years of being immersed in the paleo lifestyle, we too continue to question various foods. One big question for many people, noobs and paleo veterans alike, is Is Quinoa Paleo? Spoiler alert: it’s not. So Paleo Porn is of course filled to the brim with paleo recipes (you didn’t think it was actual porn did you?!).
