Seeds are a little iffy on the Paleo diet. They tend to contain antinutrients that are designed to protect the seed from predators like us by keeping it intact through our digestive systems. The result can often mean internal havoc for us when we consume seeds, which is why we generally recommend against them.
Seeds As Spices
Some seeds are more dangerous than others though, and brown mustard seeds are fairly benign. Add to that the fact that seeds used as spices (as in the case of brown mustard seeds) are used in such small amounts as to be harmless, and there’s really nothing to worry about. In fact, consumption of herbs and spices has been linked to numerous health benefits, including lowering inflammation and blood pressure.
If you love using mustard as a condiment, you might want to make your own, just to make sure all precautions are taken in preparation.
Paleo and Autoimmune Protocol
That said, different people react differently to some foods, including spices. If you’ve been having autoimmune issues, it might be something you’re eating. The Paleo Mom recommends eliminating all seeds (even spices and condiments) on her autoimmune protocol.
