Paleo Friendly Restaurant: Public School (Los Angeles)

While searching for a restaurant to stop at in Los Angeles, Public School appealed to my math teacher roots and the decision became easy once I saw the menu.

The name of this restaurant is actually Public School 310, and it may be misleading from the name, but it’s all part of the theme.

School Attire Not Required

From the back wall of the restaurant, near the bathrooms, to the front patio tables you’ll find the school theme carries throughout. On the back wall you’ll find the capital and lower-case letters (both printed & in cursive).

Side Note: Did you know kids aren’t learning cursive in school anymore? This has me curious about how kids will be using their signature and if it will even be necessary in the future.

Back to the restaurant decor, the seating area inside has a really cool section of books and a globe for decoration down the center, along with several little pieces of art around that help to accentuate the theme.

If you eat on the patio outside (like we did) the tables are labeled with locker numbers and bar chairs like the ones we used to have in Biology.

The waitress handed us a couple menus which were designed to look like composition notebooks.

Everywhere we looked, attention was given to keep with the theme and the artist in me loved how complimentary everything was.

The outside of the restaurant even had a sign that said “An Education in the Art of Food and Beer”.

Having been a teacher for six years, you can understand why I chose the restaurant and was enjoying the atmosphere.

Gluten-Free, Paleo Options

After arriving at LAX we needed a good and hardy meal before we checked into our Airbnb.

The waiter was patient with our questions about what oil the fries were cooked in and what gluten-free options were available and I was excited to spot grass-fed bison on the menu.

They had all the normal things you would expect, like soup and salad, appetizers, burgers, several main dish options and a full bar although we pretty much stuck with water to drink.

I ordered the BBQ bison burger on a lettuce wrap. It came with a piece of Boston lettuce on top and bottom.

For my side, I ordered the potato salad instead of fries.

The entire meal was exactly what I needed! The potato salad was a combination of olives, green beans and potatoes which was all Paleo friendly.

Jeff ordered Bangers & Mash, a traditional British dish of beef or pork filled sausage served with mashed potatoes.

The Public School ‘Bangers’ were made with chicken and herbs and served alongside a bacon brussels mash with a side of caramelized onion au jus which was absolutely delish!

So much so that months later I was still thinking about the flavor combination of the mash. Once we were home I came up with my own riff on the bacon brussels mash (and added parsnip) and you’ll find my recipe for that dish here.

This was our first stop during this trip to L.A. In my search for a good Paleo-friendly restaurant we stopped at the location in Culver City, near where we were staying, but they have several other locations in California, another in Dallas, TX and several others in the works.
