Paleo Hot Dog Hash

Finding Paleo-friendly hot dogs sounds difficult but they're really just hiding in plain sight when you know where to look. by Marla Sarris, updated November 14, 2014 Posted on November 14, 2014

When it comes to eating meat, it’s all about the source.

Ballpark hot dogs are not Paleo. They are a processed food with ingredients we can’t even identify. Who knows how many carcinogenic “preservatives” have been packed into those things. However, it is possible to get safe hot dogs from a reliable vendor. The internet is an excellent resource for local, organic, grass-fed meats. Take a look and see what’s available in your area.

Paleo Hot Dog Hash

Once you have a product you trust, throw it in a pan with some veggies, stir-fry that baby, and you’re all set. Now you have lunch, dinner, or a snack during the Sunday afternoon football game. You can even eat it for breakfast if you’re craving cured meat first thing in the morning.

If you have kids and you’re having a hard time convincing them that meat and veggies are better than chips and candy, this dish might just be your life-saver. All kids like hot dogs. Just put this in front of them and they’ll eat it up. Let them eat with their fingers if they want. Anything to get some real food in them. You don’t even have to tell them it’s good for them.

Hot Dogs I Recommend

The labels on hot dogs matter. Look for labels that say GMO-free, Gluten-free and more specifically grass-fed beef.

Applegate makes 100% grass-fed beef hot dogs and they are really the only ones I buy. You’ll need to be aware of the labels though because they also sell a similar looking package of hot dogs labeled in small lettering vegetarian grain-fed diet. And you want to make sure you grab the right ones. :)

Paleo Hot Dog Hash

Paleo Hot Dog Hash

Yield: 2-4 Servings

Ingredients

  • 12oz package 100% grass-fed beef hot dogs
  • 1 small zucchini, quatered & sliced
  • 1/4 red onion, chopped
  • 1/2 portobello mushroom, minced
  • celery salt, to taste
  • dried oregano, to taste

Directions

  1. Slice the entire package of hot dogs evenly into bite-size pieces and add to a 10-inch skillet over medium heat. Toss periodically to brown.
  2. After 5 minutes add the sliced zucchini, chopped red onion and minced mushroom. Season to taste with celery salt and dried oregano. Stir to combine everything and let cook until onions are to desired consistency and zucchini is still slightly firm.
  3. Split mixture between two bowls and serve for lunch as the main dish or serve smaller portions with a salad or more veggies.
  4. Enjoy! :)
