For dessert at the Paleo Porn Family Dinner, I whipped up a double batch of these Dark Chocolate Dipped Gooseberries and now you can make them too.

I’ve seen gooseberries sold at Standard Market before and I’ve purchased them every time I’ve seen them sold because they’re so exotic. They’re not super sweet and they’re just so damn cute!

Little did I know when I picked them up that, despite the label, I wasn’t getting gooseberries at all.

Gooseberries vs. Cape Gooseberries

Gooseberries are a fruit, similar to currants, that have been around for quite some time.

Cape gooseberries, on the other hand, are related to tomatillos and other nightshades. They are still technically a fruit, but they come from a completely different plant and species than gooseberries.

Cape Gooseberries are also known as golden berries and ground cherries in other countries. They are native to South America, but were grown by the early settlers of the Cape of Good Hope as early as 1807, which is probably where the fruit gets its name.

A Perfect Pairing with Chocolate Haystacks

You’ll notice the chocolate dipped gooseberries are not alone on the plate. I served two gooseberries along with a large chocolate haystack, but I changed the recipe a bit. I added fresh pomegranate seeds into the mix.

This Paleo dessert combination of chocolate dipped gooseberries and chocolate haystacks will make a delicious treat that won’t raise your blood sugar into oblivion. :)

Dark Chocolate Dipped Gooseberries

Dark Chocolate Dipped Gooseberries

Yield: 20-25 Gooseberries

Ingredients

  • 2oz 99% dark chocolate
  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil
  • 1 pint fresh Cape gooseberries

Directions

  1. Add chocolate to a double boiler (or a glass dish over a pot with water where the water won't touch the glass when boiling). Once the chocolate melts, add the pumpkin pie spice and coconut oil. Stir to combine.
  2. Pull back the papery outer shell on each Cape gooseberry, use it to hang on to as you dip each individual piece of fruit into the chocolate mixture and transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet to dry.
  3. Store in the fridge or freezer and serve frozen.
  4. Enjoy! :)
