How To Make an Aeropress Americano

Jeff's morning ritual is to make a great cup of coffee and now you can watch him do it in 15 seconds. by Marla Sarris on March 3, 2016

Jeff’s daily, morning ritual is to make an Aeropress Americano. Today he’s showing you how he does it.

There are so many different options when it comes to coffee in the morning. You can visit a local coffee shop, buy beans that are pre-ground or buy whole beans (bonus points if you’re able to get them recently after roasting!).

Jeff’s Favorite Beans

Jeff tends to buy whole beans and then grind them himself.

His current favorite is the Organic, Fair-Trade Sumatra from Twenty Below Coffee Co. in Fargo, ND which is what you’ll see in the video below.

When we were on our road trip west last spring we stopped in Fargo for a 3-day conference. At that conference we showed a private screening of our documentary for all those who attended.

While we were in Fargo is when we went to Twenty Below Coffee for the first time. When we came home from that trip Jeff was still thinking about their coffee and he’s been ordering freshly-roasted beans from them ever since.

Americano On The Go

Whether traveling or at home, the Aeropress is a handy tool that is small enough to fit into your carry on luggage. That means you can even make this Americano while on the go.

Don’t believe me? Check out the photo below when Jeff made his cup of joe at O’Hare Airport right before we were boarding our flight.

The Porlex grinder conveniently fits directly inside the Aeropress, which makes traveling with it even more convenient.

Is This A Recipe Or Not?

Jeff keeps telling me this is not a recipe. However, for those of us who don’t make coffee regularly (which would definitely be me!) this most definitely is a recipe. If not a recipe, it’s definitely a place to start.

Not everyone uses their Aeropress the same way so if you use yours differently, let us know how you use it.

To Keep Your Coffee Puck Or Not

Once you’ve made your Americano you’ll have coffee grounds in the shape of a hockey puck. Let your puck sit and dry out a bit and it will be much easier to move.

If you happen to compost, like we do, add your coffee grounds to your bin. If not, you can easily throw that puck directly in the trash.

How To Make an Aeropress Americano

Yield: 1 cup of coffee

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup whole coffee beans

Directions

  1. Add water to a kettle and place over high heat. Remove the kettle just before it comes to a boil (when steam starts coming out).
  2. While the water is heating up grind your beans. Use a Porlex grinder with a fine grind.
  3. Put a paper filter into the bottom of the Aeropress.
  4. As soon as you remove the water from the heat, pour a little water through the Aeropress to moisten the filter. Also pour some water over the plunger to prime it for plunging. If you did this over your mug, be sure to discard the water.
  5. Place the Aeropress over your mug and add your freshly ground coffee.
  6. Pour water over the grounds until the water level is above the number 2 on the Aeropress. If you find that the water is immediately draining through, then your grind is not fine enough.
  7. Next, agitate the water by stirring it. After stirring, wait about 5 seconds, insert the plunger, and apply even pressure for about 30 seconds until the plunger hits the bottom.
  8. Remove the Aeropress, top off your mug with hot water and you're done.
  9. Enjoy! :)
