Is Tomato Sauce Paleo?

Tomato sauce is just chopped or pureed tomatoes mixed with various seasonings (usually salt and garlic to start with) and sometimes vegetables, such as onions, mushrooms and zucchini. You can really put anything in tomato sauce, so long as it’s a vegetable, spice, or seasoning, feel free to go nuts.

Homemade vs. Store-Bought

As always, you’re better off making your own tomato sauce than buying the canned stuff. Pre-made tomato sauce (at least in the U.S.) has almost always had sugar added to it, often in the form of the dreaded high-fructose corn syrup. To get a classic, healthy tomato sauce, we maintain that nothing can match what you make with your own two hands.

Paleo and Autoimmune Protocol

The only downside is that tomatoes are nightshades, and while that’s not a problem for most people, some people do experience digestive issues and inflammation as a direct result of eating nightshades. If you’re not sure if you’re sensitive, the best way to find out is by eliminating all nightshades from your diet for at least a month, then slowly reintroduce them and note how they make you feel.

Mark Sisson gave his take on nightshades and why we should (or should not) be concerned about them.
